Half a million people bought tickets on Monday (May 25) to AC/DC's upcoming tour of the band's home country of Australia, representing 2.3 percent of the total population of 21 million, or one in every 40 Australians. According to Undercover News, local ticketing agency Ticketek reported that the sales were the most in one day for one act ever in the company's 30-year history. The band's first Sydney show sold out in 12 minutes, while 3,400 tickets were being sold per minute at the height of demand. Two extra Sydney shows were added as soon as the first sold out.
The tour will begin on February 11, 2010 in Melbourne, with three shows scheduled in that city, three in Sydney, two each in Brisbane and Perth, and one in Adelaide.
One AC/DC fan reportedly drove 20 hours and 1,600 kilometers to Perth to line up for tickets, according to Perth Now.
The group is on the road for the first time in eight years in support of its latest album, 2008's "Black Ice". A new North American leg begins on July 28 in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
